Who is eligible to attend?
Full-time middle school and high school teachers are eligible. Recent graduates of education programs at the undergraduate and graduate level who plan to pursue careers in 6-12 education are eligible to apply upon completion of an education degree in either Fall 2011 or Spring 2012.
Teachers from all school environments are welcome to apply, including public schools, charter schools, independent (non-parochial) schools, as well as Jewish day schools and other religious schools. We believe that the study of Jewish culture is relevant to all students and encourage interested teachers to apply.
Can more than one teacher apply from a given school or institution?
Yes, multiple teachers from the same school may attend Posen Seminars. We encourage you and your colleagues to apply to different seminars and share information and resources upon your return home.
Are there any fees to attend a Posen Seminar?
There is a $75 registration fee for two-day seminars, and a $150 fee for five- and six-day summer seminars. The fee is due upon your confirmation of attendance at the seminar.
What expenses does the seminar pay for?
The Posen Seminar provides books, binders, room and board, and a travel allowance up to $500 to reimburse actual travel expenses. The allowance is provided after the completion of the seminar. Seminar participants must submit a reimbursement form accompanied by receipts for expenses to receive the allowance. Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from the seminar. Participants should be prepared to pay for any personal expenses. In some instances, the Posen Foundation may offset the cost to your home institution of hiring a substitute teacher so you can attend the seminar. Please inquire for details.
Can I earn graduate credit or Continuing Education Units (CEUs)?
All Posen Seminar attendees are eligible to earn graduate credit and CEUs through our partner, the University of Cincinnati’s Center for Studies in Jewish Education & Culture.
How are applicants selected?
A selection committee consisting of seminar faculty and administrators reads and evaluates all applications.
The selection committee looks for applicants who demonstrate a strong interest in Jewish culture, the capacity to use seminar content in their curricula, and the ability to translate new knowledge and new materials into effective classroom teaching.
What are my responsibilities as a participant?
Seminar participants are asked to complete the pre-seminar reading sent to them in advance of the seminar. Participants must attend the full schedule of events. Those who do not complete the full seminar will not receive the travel allowance. At the end of the seminar, participants are asked to submit evaluations in which they review their work during the seminar and assess the seminar’s value to their personal and professional development. Participants may also be asked to submit a lesson plan that they developed as a result of the seminar.
Where are participants housed?
For two-day seminars, participants are housed in comfortable hotels near the seminar site. For five- and six-day summer seminars, participants are housed on-campus in dormitories. Participants housed in dormitories will have their own bedrooms but may share common living spaces and/or bathrooms. If necessary, transportation between the hotel or dormitory and the seminar site will be provided for participants.
Housing is only provided for the duration of the seminar. We realize some participants will have to arrive a day early or stay a day late. If this is the case, participants are responsible for arranging and paying for housing on those days. Sometimes a discounted group rate is available. Please inquire for details.
Can I commute to the seminar?
Yes, residence is not required. We understand that circumstances may make commuting preferable, and teachers who apply on a day basis are at no disadvantage during the selection process.
