DR. MANAR HASSAN Ph.D. in anthropology and sociology from Tel Aviv University, 2009
Secular Tendencies in Palestinian-Arab society in Israel Dr. Manar Hassan collected bibliographical materials, in theoretical and empirical levels, mainly in archives, periodicals, memoirs and autobiographies. The materials show vast changes that took place in the Arab society in Palestine. The research will follow chronological periods, starting with the late Ottoman rule, the British Mandate through 1948, until the present day. The next step will include interviews with certain people about their own experience in these matters. Dr. Hassan submitted a draft of the first chapter of her work, focusing on Arab society in the late Ottoman Period.
DR. YUVAL JOBANI Ph.D (SCL) in philosophy from Tel Aviv University, 2008
Three Basic Models of Secular Jewish Culture Dr. Jobani has accomplished his work on a scientific edition of A.D.Gordon's "The Human and the Nature," and wrote another chapter in his book on the criticism of religion in the works of Spinoza. He has submitted a program for his research in the next year, on "Secular Jewish Culture in the Thought of A. D. Gordon." Dr. Jobani conducts a course in Jewish Secularism. He published an essay, "Ethical or Political Religion?" in "Hebraic Political Studies" magazine.
DR AZRIEL KAMON Ph.D in Jewish History from Tel Aviv University, 2008
Links between Secularization, Modernization and Democratization as Conceived by Young Yemenite Leaders 1949-1960 (A case-study of Yemenite "Moshavim") Dr. Kamon has completed three chapters of his book. The first chapter deals with the tent camp in Hashed-Aden where young Yemenites from conservative and religious homes discover youth movements from Palestine with liberal, Democratic, and secular faces. The second chapter investigates the crisis of the democratization, and the third the confrontation with modernization. Dr. Kamon is working on the second part of his book.
ORIT MORAG Ph.D candidate, Bar-Ilan University, supervised by Prof. Oded Shermer
Definition and Implementation of "Jewish Education" in Israeli Secular Education System Ms. Morag has completed the introduction and the first chapter of her work, analyzing the attitudes of some scholars and philosophers toward her topic. She has prepared a questionnaire for parents in the educational system, and held early interviews, examining her questionnaire. Now she is "in the field," interviewing more parents, and summarizing their answers.
DR NOGA RUBIN Ph.D from Bar-Ilan University, Hebrew Literature Department
Yiddish Literature and Social Trends Towards Secularization Dr. Rubin, focusing on four "Ethical Books" in Yiddish, has collected a significant corpus of stories, almost eight hundred in Yiddish alone. She arranged all the stories in a table which placed the Old Yiddish source alongside the Hebrew translation. Now she is in the process of translating the stories into Hebrew. At the same time, she examines the sources of the stories (Jewish and non-Jewish), and the parallelism of each story both in the Yiddish Ethical Books and Old Yiddish literature in general.
Dr. Rubin submitted a table of the stories she investigates, and a sample of her adaptation of Hebrew text from the Yiddish.
DR YAIR SELTENREICH Ph.D in Social History from Nant University, France
Education as a Stimulus for Secularism: Galilee Moshavot at the Beginning of 20th Century Dr. Seltenreich has accomplished two parts of his work, i.e., compiling the materials and thematic editing of the assembled material. Now he is in the third part of his work: elaborating the findings. During 2011 he will participate in two important scientific conferences in Israel, where he will present initial findings from his research.
Dr. Seltenreich submitted a detailed summary of his work to be done in the next year, and the text of an article accepted for publication in the ‘International Journal of Jewish Education Studies: "Weinberg the Teacher: Socio-Economic Aspects of Early School-Teaching in Galilee." '
